Did you visit our store in Niels Hemmingsens Gade this weekend? Or did you pass by on your Sunday walk? Either way – we bet you stopped and had an extra look at the window just left to the door. Your eye was probably caught by some very endearing objects. It may have been the colours or the abnormal shapes that intrigued your mind. One thing is for sure though – there is something about these sculptures that instantly makes you curious.
They are Stacking Sculptures created by the Danish designer and artist Sigrid Buus. Throughout the next month we will be exhibiting the sculptural works of Sigrid Buus in the store in Niels Hemmingsens Gade as well as on the website.
Stacking Sculptures are made entirely out of vintage and recycled elements. All parts are collected around the country in flea markets and small vintage shops before they are combined into sculptures. Every single element has a story of its own – an individual shape and a function originally meant for another purpose. This leaves us with a slight feeling of recognizing everyday objects within the sculptures – it may be a vase, a lonely lid or a lamp shade.
When the elements are assembled into sculptures new stories arise. This makes us notice new details such as the textures and surfaces of different materials. The pieces mostly consist of glass, ceramic, wood and brass. It also allows us to reflect upon the actual shapes and the exact colour combinations.
Naturally each sculpture is unique, and it seems like they all developed their own individual personality. The more you observe it, the stronger it gets. The quirky yet very elegant items can be quite insisting. One of these would be a prominent and brave choice for a centerpiece in any still life.
