We are happy to introduce Lillerød - a small Danish company who has made baskets by hand since 1890. Actually it all began when the Swedish Johansson family emigrated to the small town Lillerød and decided to establish a small basket factory. It soon became a great success and for many years the factory provided a living for the family and their friends. In 1970 the family had to acknowledge that the use of plastic bags had outgrown the baskets and they had to close the factory. Luckily one day the Danish designer Lisbeth Kamstrup-Holm, whos grandparents were friends of the Johanssons, came across an old book describing the history of the baskets. She became fascinated with the baskets and the design heritage and decided to reestablish the company.
Curious to learn more? We asked Lisbeth a few questions - take a look below.
The baskets are still handmade in Denmark. Upper right picture: The Lillerød baskets was sold in 1910 - just around the corner from Stilleben...
Why did you decide to reestablish Lillerød?
“I have known the Johansson family for many years, and I have always found the baskets and the factory fascinating. As a little girl I remember visiting together with my grandmother. I was at a time in my life where I wanted to redefine my work life and do something that really meant something and then I came across a book by Per-Olof Johansson describing the history and the beautiful products. Together with my dad I began a long proces of restarting the production and redefining the baskets to fit contemporary everyday life.”
How are the baskets made?
“Every basket is made by hand in Denmark using the talents of people with special needs. We are producing in a manner and a speed that allows space for the people working in our production, and it is crucial to us to produce in this manner. We have refined the production method in such a way that you are able to contribute to the production from the minute you are enrolled in the project. The baskets are made from the finest ash wood, and no compromise is made when it comes to quality.”
How do you use the baskets yourself?
“I use the baskets for everything from firewoods to newspapers, laundry and to my oils on the kitchen table. My kids also have them in their rooms for storing toys.”
Today Lillerød is run by Lisbeth Kamstrup-Holm and her father.
