Magic birds and mermaids

Magic birds and mermaids

“I have prepared this chair for you so you can sit comfortable.” The Danish Designer Sarah Becker points to a chair wrapped in rag rugs and different fabrics. “I work all the time so I don’t have a couch.”

I sit in the chair and take a look around in her bright three-room apartment on 6. floor. In every corner there is a fairytale going on; hand-cut paper birds waiting for a home, antique cabinets filled with small treasures, large bundles of stacked paper and folders and the most beautiful hand-cut pieces.

Yes, Sarah Becker is very dedicated to her work. “I get up very early in the morning and go for a one and a half hour walk. After this I start working, nonstop until afternoon. I guess I am very hard on myself - I never give up. I always work on several projects at a time and if something teases me, I continue with another project and go back to the other one when I have solved it. After I have prepared and eat my dinner I continue working until I go to sleep. This is my day.” She smiles and continues:

“Sometimes I say to myself: I mustn’t die before I have used this specific thread or this piece of fabric.”

This Christmas Sarah made us unique hand-cut paper birds and mermaids, decorated our Christmas window and made the motif for our limited edition Christmas bag. The bag carries a blue dove of peace. Why this focus on birds?

Animal silhouettes: “I have always been very interested in animal silhouettes, their texture and colours. I think that´s why I became interested in paper work, because you cut out their silhouettes. It already started when I was a child. I did many zebras. To me birds are amazing and mysterious - just think about how many miles they fly each year...”

Strange bird: Do you have a favourite bird? “Maybe its not my favourite but I had some strange experiences with the swallow. I mean how many times in ones life does a swallow suddenly come down the chimney? This happened to me three times... Each time it was alive so I could set it free...”
