Description

The sakura tree and cherries by Poul Gernes were originally created as a site specific installation at Vesthimmerlands Gymnasium. Both teachers and students took part in the creation of the ceramic friese of cherries running along the walls of the communal hall.

Gernes’ works are colourful, easily understandable and unpretentious.

As part of Gernes’ humanistic mission, his works communicate directly with the viewer with no need of explanation. They are decorative without being mundane and the colours all work together both within the piece itself and with its surroundings.

This print is the result of a unique collaboration between the Gernes Foundation and Stilleben to continue Poul Gernes' work of making art accessible to everyone.

About the artist

Danish artist Poul Gernes (1925-1996) is known both for his ornamental, colourful works and for his humanistic approach to art. Rather than making art for the sake of art, Gernes saw people as the raison d'être for art. Throughout his life he worked for a democratic redistribution of aesthetics by making art accessible to everyone. From hospitals to schools, Gernes included the users of a specific space in making the art on site to develop a sense of community and responsibility towards the art. Along with his team, Gernes created more than 100 site specific artworks in and around public buildings.

Gernes was also part of the founding group around the Ex-School, established in 1961 as a protest against the traditionalism of the Royal Academy of Art in Copenhagen.
