The Akari lamp is handmade in Japan using washi paper produced from mulberry bark. The washi paper is cut into strips and carefully adhered to the bamboo ribbing. Each lamp has a collapsible construction which enables it to be flat packed until installed in a home.
Isamu Noguchi designed the first Akari lamp in 1951 and has created more than 100 designs in the family-run Ozeki workshop in the Gifu, Japan - a town with a long history creating lanterns from mulberry bark and bamboo. Using traditional methods, Noguchi designed floor lamps, table lamps and ceiling lamps in different shapes and sizes and with a distinctive expression.
