Bespoke cardboard - Bruunshaab Gl. Papfabrik

Our Oak Boards come in a cardboard gift box, made especially for Stilleben by Bruunshaab Gl. Papfabrik in Viborg, Jutland.
Bruunshaab has produced cardboard since 1919 and is one of the very few working cardboard factories still in operation in Denmark. In addition to cardboard production, Bruunshåb Gl. Papfabrik has been a working factory museum since 1987.

Behind the factory buildings, to the north, is a steep, forested slope. This wooded area is known as “Cardboard Wood” to the locals, due to partly being planted by a previous owner of the cardboard factory.
Before 1919, the buildings served as a clothes mill, and up until 1986 Bruunshaab was run entirely on commercial terms. After being declared bankrupt in 1986 and selling off some of the buildings, Bruunshaab Gl. Papfabrik reopened in 1987 as a factory museum.

The machines and factory environment today has remained mainly the same since the 1950s and today Bruunshåb Gl. Papfabrik is the last factory in Denmark to produce fibreboard.
Fibreboard is made from 100% recycled paper, including newsprint, print publications and the rolls from toilet paper and paper towels. Fibreboard is both stable and flexible. It is also pH-neutral and can be made in both undyed grey and bespoke colours. The cardboard for our gift boxes is undyed.

During the summer, visitors to the factory museum can observe the production and the old machines that turn wastepaper into cardboard.
The factory supplies a number of companies in Denmark and abroad. It also has a department that produces fibreboard boxes, luggage for children, waste bins and even biodegradable urns.
