On the island of Bornholm, there is a small gem that we return to every time we visit the island: Galleri Sonja, located in the heart of Allinge on the northern part of the island.
Galleri Sonja is both a café and a gallery, blending together into one beautiful and cohesive experience.
Visiting Galleri Sonja, Bornholm
Galleri Sonja is founded on a special sense of wholeness and an appreciation for things created with care and intention.
The focus here is on the carefully selected, the simple, and the well-crafted — from the space itself and its materials to the café’s ingredients, the objects on the walls, and the products in the small curated shop.
The gallery features a distinctive selection of products by local and international artists, including hand-thrown and wood-fired cups and bowls by Anna Mors, beautiful ceramics with remarkable tactile glazes by Anne Mette Hjortshøj, wall artworks by Sara Martinsen, as well as elegant trays, boards, and shelving by Tyge Axel Holm.
Just like the artworks in the gallery and the products in the small shop, all tableware used in the café has been carefully chosen: beautiful handmade cups, bowls, and plates.
Galleri Sonja has selected our own Alma cutlery for serving the café’s meals, which can be enjoyed indoors or on the new large terrace opening soon, and we are proud to be in such fine company.
Adjacent to Galleri Sonja is also Villa Sonja, housed in a former printing house from 1886 and home to three holiday apartments.
Across the shop, café, and gallery, objects rooted in craftsmanship and artisanal traditions are brought together. Materials such as ceramics, glass, textiles, and wood recur throughout. The spaces were created by Norm Architects, with a beautiful, simple, Nordic, and refined interior that almost evokes Japanese minimalism.
The inspiration for the name comes from two strong women: the Danish sculptor Sonja Ferlov and the television character Sonja from Saxogade.
Galleri Sonja is conceived as a place where one can slow down. A place with room to observe, sense, and experience where the connection to nature outside, to the place itself, and to craftsmanship is allowed to come forward.
Galleri Sonja has focused on creating an experience centred on quality, calm, and fine craftsmanship, exactly as we ourselves strive to do with STILLEBEN.
